“The biggest risk is not taking any risk…” – Mark Zuckerberg

“The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world that’s changing quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks”

He’s certainly right about that.

We live in a very dynamic and fast changing world.

By staying in the same comfortable position, we can easily miss out on the things that are important to us.

By staying in the same position, we avoid taking unnecessary risks, well because it’s a risk.

We can either win greatly or lose very badly but the thing with risks is that we won’t know the outcome until after the it has been done and a lot of time there’s no undo button.

No turning back.

But in other cases, it may be as easy as just moving along and trying again.

That’s why a lot of us naturally tend to choose the seemingly safer option in the moment.

The unknown and the uncontrollable is simply too scary.

What we’re forgetting is that the safer option in the moment might turn out to become the opposite in the long run.

Imagine this, you decide to stick with your stable job and comfortable salary because it may seem like the safest move.

It offers you the stability and security you want in life.

As the world and technology around us changes however, that very same position may become obsolete, leaving you with challenges you never saw coming.

You might’ve thought of exploring different fields and new opportunities to further increase your value to companies, but never seemed to act upon them.

You felt safer just sticking with the original plan.

Maybe you had a great idea for starting your own business but found yourself being too afraid to quit your safe job and fully act on it.

You chose to stick with what seemed like the safer option back then but as you perhaps will find out in the future, it could all be too late, and you might be regretting your past choices.

Your value to a company might decrease or completely vanish because technology can do the work more efficiently and a lot cheaper.

Someone else might’ve had the very same business idea as you and actually acted upon it, and all you can do is watch the dollars flow into his or her pocket from the sideline.

A risk can be anything we do.

Even driving a car is a risky move, not because we’re bad drivers ourselves but because someone else might be.

Most of us still decide to take that risk though, without thinking twice.

Without realizing that by driving, we’re potentially putting our entire lives at risk rather than if we were to fail on a project we start.

The project could be a complete disaster but most likely we will still be alive and could try another approach.

If we were to find ourselves in an accident with a bad driver however, we might not get a second chance at anything.

Although the risk is small, we still decide to gamble with our lives.

Because naturally, driving is more comfortable and a lot faster than walking.

All it takes is being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

My point is, we still do it.

So why is it so difficult to take good risks that actually move us forward with life?

Risk-taking is a crucial part of growth.

If choose to stay in our safe corner because of the fear attached, we will stay in that very same corner forever.

If we avoid taking risks, we automatically avoid failure.

And if we avoid failure, we automatically avoid succeeding in whatever it is that we’re trying to achieve.

Because failure is the most important part of growing.

It teaches us to learn from our own mistakes and act differently next time.

It allows us to come up with alternative perspectives and think outside the box.

It forces us to constantly try new things.

And that is where we finally will find ourselves on the right road.

Fear is what’s stopping us from moving forward in our journey but fear is also what gets us the farthest.

If we avoid risks and avoid adapting to the changes around us altogether, it could lead to us missing out on career advancements, personal development and even a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Make better choices.

Take good risks.
