“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” – Wayne Gretzky

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"

Gretzky, a great hockey player who explained the importance of taking shots.

In the case of hockey, you can pass and control the game as much as you want, however you can’t win if you don’t score more goals than your opponents, and you can’t score more goals than your opponents if you don’t take any shots.

The same goes for life, we can pass ideas around as much as we like, making bulletproof plans, but if we never take any shots at them, we’ll never end up scoring.

I always had the idea of running my own business and being in full control of my life.

It remained as an idea for a very long time because I was too scared to act on it.

I didn’t realize that by just waiting around for the perfect opportunity I might end up missing out on it completely instead.

That scared the crap out of me, but I still did the very same thing.

Nothing.

I came across multiple quotes by famous people and this one certainly impacted me in the right way.

I realized that I needed to start shooting.

I might miss a couple of shots but at least I would shoot, and I could learn from them.

At some point one of those shots would turn out to be the winner, right?

Because if didn’t shoot at all I would still miss out on everything.

So there really was no reason for me to not shoot, the worst thing that could happen by taking a shot, was the very same thing which was guaranteed to happen if I didn’t shoot at all – missing.

This quote has found its place right in my heart.

I believe it’s one of the best ones out there.

It inspired me to start taking action in any aspect of life and ended up leading me to where I am today.

This has served as a true inspiration for me.

In hockey, the objective of a shot is clear, get the puck inside the net.

We know where to aim it towards.

Sometimes it goes in and sometimes it doesn’t.

But again, it will never go in if we never shoot.

Sometimes the target is not as clear in life as it is in hockey, and we might struggle a bit more on where to aim.

There might be an obstacle right in the path of our shot, a defender perhaps, that would block any shots coming its way.

The best thing to do is to break it down into smaller steps, for instance we can make an extra pass before shooting.

Work our way around it instead of straight through.

Sometimes the fastest way is not going straight forward.

I had no one to make that extra pass to, so I just shot anyway.

I risked missing my goal but at least there was some chance of success.

And if I did miss, then I could learn to aim differently and simply shoot again.

By not shooting at all, there would’ve been no chance of success.

I knew where to aim my shot at and how to best point my stick.

I knew my entire game plan and I took the shot.

So, what if we don’t know where to aim our shots at?

What if we have an idea and don’t know where to begin?

Is your team down by five goals in the third period and want to achieve the ultimate comeback?

Do you even believe it can be done in the first place?

Maybe not at first, but if the score were 4-5, then I bet it would be a different story.

By focusing on each small step of the way at a time and slowly scoring one goal at a time, then suddenly you could be just one goal away from the ultimate comeback.

All you need to do is believe it can be done, take any shot and any opportunity coming your way and you’ll slowly make your way there.

You will miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Take a shot today.
